Paper details
Write a formal comparative essay about the two novels you read. A strong, central thesis must hold your ideas together: there must be a purpose for showing the similarities and differences between two novels.
Topic:
How has your “global vision” changed from reading the texts you’ve read? What universal truth about humanity have you learned from reading your group novels?
Novels:
Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese
Sweetness in the Belly by Camilla Gibb
Compare means to show the similarities and differences, while contrast means to only show the differences.
Minimum 4 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12-point readable font, MLA format
You may only use your novels. No outside sources are allowed. This is called a primary source essay. Your last page should be a Work Cited page with only two entries – one for each novel.
*** You must use at least six quotations from your sources throughout your essay. ***
Formatting Instructions:
Evidence (Quotations): Integrate your evidence by providing a context. This is easy to do in the case of the novel. Use a parenthetical citation following each quotation indicating the author’s last name, and the page number from which the quotation is taken.
Title: Always underline or italicize titles (but not both). The Kite Runner or The Kite Runner (or White Tiger or Indian Horse etc etc) are the only options available.
Point of View: Do not use the first person “I” or “I think”. This is a formal essay. Therefore, your argument should be made from an objective point of view. That the opinions expressed are those of the writer are understood.
Tense: Present tense is preferable to past tense. However, you must use the tense you have chosen consistently throughout your essay.
Audience: Assume an academic audience. Do not use slang or abbreviations. Also, assume the reader of your essay has read the works you are discussing. This means that you can refer briefly to the story without going into all the preceding or following details. Do not summarize the plot!
Computer Problems: Save, save, save. Save to a data key. Save to a hard drive. Save to the Cloud! Produce hard copy. Computer problems happen from time to time. They do not buy you extensions; they make your essay late.
Titles: Dream up a creative title – The Poisonwood Bible and The White Tiger is not acceptable. “Comparative Essay” is also not acceptable. Your title should provide a hint of what’s to come.
