I remember so well that I lost all my parents on my wedding day due to a tragic road accident that occurred as they were coming to the wedding. I was not told what had taken place until after the wedding. Many questions ran through my mind for not seeing them come. It was a simple note from my brother that calmed me down. It stated, “Mummy and Daddy will arrive a bit late, their car has had a mechanical problem. ” I got the shocking news a few minutes after the wedding. I fell down in tears.

I was so tired, stressed and growing thin because of the wedding arrangements. I was expected to begin my master’s program immediately after the honeymoon. I went into deep depression. Life had no meaning. The university policy required all short listed students to enroll during the first week and begin lessons in the second week without fail. I could not postpone the studies.

After a series of counseling sessions a week after burial, I was half prepared to face life again. I enrolled for the study amid depression and forced myself to attend lessons in that state. For the first week I understood nothing in class because my mind and emotions had been overshadowed by what had taken place. It took six months to reconcile with the fact that I had lost my beloved parents on the day that was meant to bring joy into my life.

It is unbelievable that I remained committed to my studies throughout that period. I became the first in my class in all the weekly tests that we did scoring clear A’s. As we speak, I am now completing my master’s program, well knowing that I was victorious in that challenging and trying
