In this chapter’s application response I want you to critically think about the role of alcohol and marijuana (cannabis) in our society and the possible dangers related to both drugs. Although there certainly are dangers in the use of ANY drug, we find that alcohol is legal, yet many other drugs like marijuana are not. I want you to look specifically into what is dysfunctional, distressing, and dangerous about both substances, but also how use doesn’t necessarily mean those 3 “D’s”.

a. In what ways can alcohol and Alcohol Use Disorder lead to dangers for individuals and also the society around us?
b. In what ways can alcohol and Alcohol Use Disorder lead to dysfunction for individuals and also the society around us?
c. In what ways can alcohol and Alcohol Use Disorder lead to distress for individuals and also the society around us?
3) What is Cannabis Use Disorder (marijuana addiction) and what do we mean by the term addiction?
a. Discuss the concept of Cannabis Use Disorder (marijuana addiction) and the causes of the disorder.
b. Discuss specifically the terms physical dependency and psychological dependency in regards to marijuana use. (Especially when many will say “Marijuana isn’t addictive!”)
c. Discuss the terms related to physical dependency called withdrawal and tolerance. Discuss them through the lens of marijuana use and abuse.
4) What are the personal and societal impacts of Cannabis Use Disorder?
a. In what ways can marijuana and Cannabis Use Disorder lead to dangers for individuals and also the society around us?
b. In what ways can marijuana and Cannabis Use Disorder lead to dysfunction for individuals and also the society around us?
c. In what ways can marijuana and Cannabis Use Disorder lead to distress for individuals and also the society around us?
5) Tie it all together…
a. Discuss your conclusions about the fact that alcohol is legal and marijuana is not.
b. Discuss how your thinking may have changed when discussing this topic. Tell me what you LEARNED from this thought process.
c. Keep in mind, this is not to sway you to believe both substances are either “good or bad”, it is to have you critically consider the impacts of both substances on individuals and our society as a whole. This way you can make critically thought out conclusions about the use of these substances in your own life as well as throughout our society.
