In the English class you are about to proceed through you will find a lot of great articles. Some articles you will find are longer than others but do not be discouraged because they are a great read. This course is full of deadlines that need to be met on time. It is very important to complete the assignments when they are due because falling behind is not an option. At times the assignment feel like they lack direction and that’s because it’s open to your interpretation. This class makes it very easy to write as you and not for an assignment. Henrietta Lacks will be an easy read that is very enjoyable. You will learn more about ethics, medical history and writing out of this book than you would have expected out of an English 100 class. The essay writing process will be the easiest you have encountered out of any class if you take advantage of the time provided and meet the weekly deadlines. The most interesting thing for me was the variety of articles and what can be learned from them; you will have to read them for a reason, don’t miss the point of them. Making time for an online time was the most difficult aspect of the course. I found personal deadlines to be helpful for me. In other words, if there is a deadline by Friday make Wednesday night the deadline for the assignment. Time management will be a key aspect in order to succeed. As the class progressed we lost many students along the way. I noticed this on the discussion boards. Don’t be the person who starts something and becomes unable to finish due to poor time management. Nothing about this class is impossible to finish with enough time to plan. Professor Larson does a great job of outlining the objectives for the week. Make sure to find out what the objectives are and overview your work for the week as early as possible in order to make a plan and set deadlines that will work for you. If time management is not a strong behavior of yours, a traditional course might be a better fit for you. The thing to really learn is that writing is a process. It’s something that keeps getting better with every draft and with every minute composing. Do not be discouraged by shortcomings and know that the only way to get better and reach your academic goal is to spend time writing. Writing classes have always been a difficult subject for me but this class allowed me to accomplish my goal and finish a successful semester in English 100. I wish you the best of luck, sincerely Former English 100 student.

Dear Future English 100 Online Student, This class is overall challenging but very doable. We are expected to complete weekly discussion boards, weekly journal entries, and reading and writing assignments. We were assigned to read the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Although the read might seem overall whelming there is no need to worry! Once you get over having to do the assignment you will most likely get into the read and continue reading more then what you are expected to for the week. This book is very interesting and the weekly assignments link to it really do help with the essay we need to do about it. The weekly assignments will be taking quotations from your assigned reading and write about it. I suggest you document each page you took a quote from. That will help you with your later assignments. I can guarantee you will succeed if you just do the assignments and give yourself time to dedicate yourself to them. Assignments for this class are usually due Wednesdays by noon, Fridays by noon, and on occasions on Sundays before midnight. I personally make it a point to complete my assignments the latest a day before anything is due. This gives you room to have wiggle room. Malfunctions can happen through the site or your personal computer so you want to make sure you give yourself a safety net. This class was a personal challenge for me only because I was not use to using MLA. I gave myself time to learn the proper steps and completely proper expectations. Although stressful, I am now thankful I was faced with this dilemma because now I have learned something new and can take it with me with future classes. Another great thing about this specific online class is that our teacher is very on hands and is willing to help with any questions we have. I had no issues with responses when I asked and felt very comfortable to approach our professor even if I felt my question was silly or obvious. I hope you enjoy English 100 online and wish you luck! Sincerely, A Former English 100 Student

Dear Future English 100 Online Student: Welcome to one of the best courses you will experience during your journey at MiraCosta College! This is my last semester at MCC, and after two full years, I can honestly say that Professor Larson is one of the best instructors at this college. If you truly wish to improve your writing skills, she’s the one to help you do it. This course meets asynchronously, but is NOT self-paced. What this means is that you are not required to be online at particular times; however, you do have specific due dates. Therefore, you absolutely must budget your time accordingly. You will be required to complete reading assignments which consist primarily of non-fiction academic texts; these are designed to develop your critical thinking and writing skills. If you are fortunate, and Professor Larson does not change the required novel for this course, you will also be reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which is a most-compelling page-turner. This is the first time that I truly enjoyed my assigned reading for an English course. This book will be the basis for one of your formal writing assignments. The other major writing assignment will be a research paper, through which Professor Larson will meticulously guide you. Informal writing assignments, such as a journal, will also be a part of your weekly schedule, and you will be participating in online discussion boards. Give careful consideration to your initial posting, and respond respectfully and thoughtfully to your classmates’ postings. The assignments are not difficult, but they are time-consuming, so I cannot stress enough the need for time-management. You will need to dedicate at least 12 hours per week to this course (more if composition is not your strong point). However, Professor Larson is completely committed to your success; she is also more than fair and absolutely available to you. If, at any time, you are struggling, just shoot her an email. I guarantee you, she will help you overcome whatever challenge you may be having. Just like anything in life, you will get out of this course what you put into it. I was required to take this course in order to transfer to CSUSM, even though I already had AP credits from another university. At first I was annoyed, but now I am so glad that I was “forced” to take English 100, and am so thankful to have had Professor Larson as my instructor. My writing skills were adequate (some would even say above-average) when I began this course; but I have learned (and re-learned) so much about academic writing, that I would not have it any other way. My writing has definitely improved, and because of the way Professor Larson teaches us to think, I feel confident that my writing will continue to improve as I move forward with my education. Best wishes on your journey. Sincerely, Former English 100 Student
