WRITING RESEARCH REPORTS IN PSYCHOLOGY
This guide will enable you to write reports in the format used by professional psychologists (as prescribed by the American Psychological Association). The information in the following sections will help you to present the various types of research report relevant to psychology.
What is a Report?
The aim of report writing is to inform others about a study that has been carried out. A report should be written with a complete stranger in mind. The information contained in a report should allow anyone with no prior knowledge of your study to understand exactly what you have done. They want to know precisely:
● Why did you do the study? What was the rationale (justification) behind the research and what does it contribute to Psychological theory or practice?
● How did you conduct the research? How was the research carried out, what methods were used, and could this be replicated elsewhere based on the information you have provided?
● What did you find? What were the results/findings of the study?
● What does this mean? What do the results mean in terms of your aims/hypothesis/research questions, and what do they contribute to existing knowledge.
APA CONVENTIONS
You must present reports in Psychology according to the conventions set out by the American Psychological Association (APA).
