You will demonstrate your skill in articulating complex ideas, examining claims and evidence found in your research materials, supporting your ideas with relevant reasons and examples, sustaining a coherent discussion, and using standard written English.
Assignment: Using the sources that you listed on your Annotated Bibliography, as well as any additional sources, write a research-based argument essay of seven to ten pages setting forth and proving an argument centered on the research question you developed when preparing your annotated bibliography.
Topic: Develop your preliminary research question articulated in your Annotated Bibliography into a coherent thesis statement about the topic articulated in the assignment sheet for the Annotated Bibliography: Analyze some aspect of one of the stories or poems read for class this semester. (If you choose the Dickinson poems, you may analyze up to two of those poems.)
Your Research Question/Thesis must also include some outside theoretical perspective or analytical framework, whether it be psychological, historical, biographical, sociological, or scientific in nature.
Use the same story or poem(s) and research question as for your Annotated Bibliography, unless you were specifically instructed to choose another. Otherwise, no topic changes allowed!

- Establishing a claim
- Organizing a research-based argument
- Developing your own argument using evidence consisting of expert opinion, facts and statistics, and your analysis of the literary source material and the ideas found in your research

Purpose: To convince your readers to agree with your positionor at least to believe in the soundness and reasonableness of your position
