Get Help Now!Chapter 1 of Tolstoy novel ‘A confession’ will be summarized. The chapter has been chosen because it gives insight as to why the author decided to write the book. It also highlights of the struggles that he is going through and gives a summary of his faith as a child when he was growing up. Tolstoy writes that as he grew up, he attended the Orthodox Church. It is this church that he grew up and baptized. For the better part of his childhood life, as is the expectations of the church, he was taught of the ways and doctrines of the Orthodox Christian Faith. He seemed to have followed these teachings to the letter until he was eighteen years. It was at this age that he started to question the ways of the church. Tolstoy had just abandoned his university second course when all this began. He stopped to believe in the things that he was taught when he was younger. He writes, “I no longer believed any of the things I had been taught”. From this statement, it clearly shows that Tolstoy wanted to find a deeper understanding of faith by himself.
Tolstoy says that much of what he did was in obedience to the teachings of the church and not he himself wanted to. He felt obliged to obey Orthodox faith teachings without questioning. Probably, it would be because other people, especially his siblings followed the faith too
