Question:The decline in sheep and lamb numbers in the U.S. can be attributed to multiple reasons and causes. Did you find any of these reasons or causes surprising? Why or why not? As discussed in lecture, there are around 1,000 different breeds of sheep. I only shared a few common breeds, but there are many others out there. Do some research (make sure to cite your source(s) in your post) and select a breed of sheep and describe the following:

Where did the breed originate from?

What’s the primary purpose or use of the breed?

Strengths and weaknesses of the breed

Finally, if you were a goat producer which type of goat would you choose to raise? Please explain why.

Answer: Only one reason for sheep and lamb declined really surprised me and that was the predator increase. It seems that many more of the predators would be driven out of domesticated areas since they have been established for longer. I was also very surprised to see the statistics for which predators were the most common and the fact that domestic dogs were very high on the list. My family has owned a couple of goats over the past couple of years and coyotes have always been of large concern for us. We have actually had one of our goats killed by a pitbull that lived down the road but I did not realize that it was that common.

I decided to look into the Clun Forest Sheep. The Clun Forest sheep originates from the ancient market town of Clun, situated in the beautiful Clun Valley in the southwest corner of Shropshire and near the county of Powys in England. Clun is a mountainous town where the sheep roam the mountains and pastures below. It reminds me a lot of the movie Heidi. The primary purpose of this breed is for their wool. It is a close short-textured wool that is always high in quality. They are also great mothering sheep. There are very few pros and cons for these sheep since they are not highly popular but some of the pros include that they are very good mothers and produce high quality fleece. A negative aspect for them is that it is mandatory to get them permanently identified with tattoos which can be expensive and a hassle for farmers.

If I were a goat producer I would choose to raise Cashmere Goats. I had have some experience with these goats and they have some beautiful fur that would sell for a large amount of money. I think it would be easy to make a profit off of these goats due to the large amount of high-quality hair that they have. They are also very loving goats who have quite a personality. They would be a good goat to raise with a family around who would be helping to care for them.
