Lantana is a plant that was introduced to Australia as a non-native species. It consists of very colorful flowers and bright green leaves. However, what is not automatically known is that the leaves are poisonous to most animals, and beneath the flowers and the foliage lies a web of dense, tangled, and sharp branches below. Lantana, an Australian film released in 2001, shares similar characteristics. The movie covers the intertwining lives of various characters, which grow more and more complex as time goes on. These characters cover all ranges of personalities, and all are multi-faceted, which makes it all too easy to relate to them as they flash through their passion, jealousy, sorrow, whatever it is they are feeling at that time.
One character in particular stood out to me. Jane O’May is a woman in her thirties who is separated from her husband. At times I felt sorry for her, other times I thought she was petty and naïve. During our discussions in class, for those students that spoke, it seemed that people either really liked her or really didn’t like her. Some thought she was always trying to do the right thing, some thought she was vindictive and mean. The public opinion seemed to be completely polarized. I personally never truly hated her or loved her. It seemed to me that during some scenes she was trying to do the right thing, at other times she was crossing the line – but I never came up with a definitive judgment on whether or not she was “good”. I have concluded that there is not just one right answer. Jane is neither all good nor all bad. She, like most people in the world, is a human being who makes choices.
