Learning to write a research paper is one of the most important skills you can develop for your college, and future, careers. Your research-based writing provides you with an opportunity to enter into an academic conversation of interest to you, carefully consider other scholars’ claims, and bring in your own unique perspective in a persuasive argument. You have already done quite a bit of work for this paper: you have a tentative thesis, a clear audience, evidence to persuade that audience of the exigency of your topic, and carefully crafted entries in an annotated bibliography to help you utilize sources in your paper. Now your job is to bring all the parts together to persuade your reader and prove your claims.

Why should I do this?

Why write a research paper? Research can often be an end to itself, so why push your work one step further? When you have to craft an argument, it means you have to do something with your research, you get to make it do work for you. By writing a Persuasive Research Essay, you will be able to answer your research question with a debatable, interesting, and exigent thesis, with an awareness of the stakes of your answer for the issue you’ve been researching, as well as its practical applications on the world. What do you want to persuade your readers of? And what do you want them to do with that newfound perspective? You get to answer these questions now as an expert on your topic.

How do I write an argument based on research?

So, where do you begin? There is neither template nor shortcut for writing a research paper; rather, writing a research paper is, amongst other things, a recursive process of practice, revision, and (re)organization. It’s messy; it’s difficult.

• After collecting sources and completing the annotated bibliography, decide on a thesis statement that clearly states an arguable position within a topic of interest. • Think about your audience. To whom are you writing and why? What sort of constraints does writing to that audience pose on the composition of your text? What sort of evidence will be particularly persuasive?
• What kind of sources will you be utilizing in your text? In what ways will you be using them?
• How will you utilize rhetorical appeals in your text? How can you establish your own ethos as an author? Utilize pathos? Develop logos?

What steps do I need to take?

Step back from the annotated bibliography and ask yourself what you’ve learned. What’s interesting here? What’s complicated? What’s puzzling? What do you know now before you collected and analyzed your sources? Who would care about this?

Now consider the text you want to write. What do you want to focus on in your paper? And who do you want to share your information with? Given the answers to these questions, talk with your instructor and classmates about what your text should look like. How will your research paper

take shape? Do you want to a write a formal report for other scholars in your field? A position paper for your political representative? A recommendation to university administrators?

Te text you write, and even how you go about planning and writing it, will depend on the answer to the previous questions. Consider the main claim(s) you want to make and the evidence

that you need to prove that claim(s) as well as the conventions of the genre you want to write, relevant to the audience you want to write for. At this point you should stop, revisit your research

question and your answers to the questions above, and write a refined thesis statement for yourself that you want to argue in your paper. Next, make a plan and start drafting. You might need to make an outline first, or you might just want to write down all of the ideas you have and then go back and try to organize it.

Once you have a reasonable draft, share it with your teacher and classmates. Tell them your point, your desired audience, and the type of genre you are trying to write. Ask them to provide feedback on how well you accomplished your goals and how you might improve. Then revise. And revise again.

While your Research Essay may take a variety of different shapes, it will include these traits:

• A clear point or series of points about your topic of inquiry developed over the course of the text

• An introduction with a hook, background information, a bridge, and a thesis statement
