Two-Part Reflection on Logical Fallacy in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Debates
Identify a logical fallacy from page 196 or 197 in the textbook and connect it to Donald Trump’s or Hilary Clinton’s statements about a particular topic in ONE of the Presidential Debates (see Moodle “Videos” folder). Explain how errors in the candidate inferential reasoning led him/her to think/feel and/or behave a particular way. Explain how the candidate falls victim to this logical fallacy and what the results are. Be sure to describe the question asked of the candidate, how the candidate responds (does s/he actually directly answer the question or does s/he deliberately direct attention to another topic, etc.), how the moderator responds to the candidate’s response, how the audience responds, what feelings are exhibited by the candidate, the other candidate, the moderator, the audience, etc.
2. Describe how the candidate did not practice higher level thinking and/or didn’t use the principles of inferential reasoning. Briefly expand on how the candidate’s argument would have been different if the s/he had applied higher level thinking and/or had used the principles of inferential reasoning.
