The topics addressed in the lab are Utilisation, Queuing delay, Throughput and Page response time, and how they affect network performance. A simulated Home LAN of 3PCs, a 100BT switch and a Linksys cable modem router was used.

Get Help Now!This is the rate at which the network resources are being used by the hosts on the network.
Queuing delay
This is the time spent by a packet on the ‘network queue’ before been delivered. This is due to a number of reasons such as packet loss. Queuing delay is largely dependent on the size of the WAN link or data rate of the network and the nature of the arriving traffic.
Throughput
This is the rate of successful packet delivery from the sender to the receiver in a network.
“Through put is rate at which the sending process can deliver bits to the receiving process”
(Kurose and Ross 2008). During the course of this lab the major difference between bandwidth
and throughput was learnt. In addition to this, the relationship between the throughput and the queuing delay of a network was studied.
Page response time
This is the time lapse between when a page is requested by a user and it is delivered across a network. It is inversely proportional to the data rate of the network.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this lab is to simulate some what-if scenarios over different WAN links; 20kbps, 40kbps, 512kbps, and T1 links. And also to see how network performance can be affected and optimised by different network parameters such as network throughput and queuing delay.
ADVANCED SCENARIO 1

Fig 1 The throughput and queuing delay of all 4 scenarios
The throughput of a network is the number of packets successfully delivered from the sender to the receiver in a network. The queuing delay of a network is the time spent by a packet on the ‘network queue’ before it is delivered. Fig 1a shows the throughput for all four scenarios, while Fig 1b shows the queuing delay for all four scenarios on the WAN link.
The observation made is this:
The throughput for all four scenarios is similar. This goes to say that packets are being successfully delivered, at a rate of 10packets/sec, in all four WAN links.
The queuing delay for all four scenarios is dissimilar. This goes to say that the rate at which the packets are being delivered is largely dependent on the bandwidth size of the WAN link.
ADVANCED SCENARIO 2
The data rate of a network link is the rate of transfer of data communication resources across the network. A page request (e.g. a user clicking a link) involves data packets being sent out to request the download of the page contents of a page which are made of data packets as well. A web page, therefore, is made of the outflow and inflow of data packets through a network. It can thus be seen that the time lapse between when a page is requested and when it is received by the user (known as page response time) is inversely proportional to the data rate of the network. This relationship was later shown, mathematically.
Packets are measured or quantified in bytes.
The page response time, as earlier defined, is measured in bytes per second.
In this scenario, the data rate of the WAN link between the Router and the ISP was changed to get an average page response time of 1second.
From Fig 2.1(a) below, it can be seen that the data rate needed for a page response time of 1second will fall between the 40kbps and 512kbps WAN links.
