For the short paper, you must address a theoretical controversy in ethical theory covered in class. Please
consider looking at future topics as opposed to simply choosing something already covered. You should ideally
choose a topic that interests you. The paper must involve taking a position within the issue through exposition,
analysis, and evaluation (For example, you could evaluate the claims of error theory, either supporting the view
or criticizing it in favor of some other view about the nature of moral claims). To do this, you must utilize at
least two sources (at least one of which must be in philosophy) in addition to the class material.
Formatting: The paper must be typed and double-spaced, use 1-inch margins, be in 12-point Times New Roman
font, and include citations and a bibliography.
Citations: Any use of any text must be appropriately cited. Citations should be parenthetical (format: [author’s
last name], [page number]) and the bibliography should follow a standard format that includes all relevant
bibliographic information.
Sources: Be very cautious with using sources found on the internet through keyword searches in a search engine
such as google. Favor obvious academic sources and if in doubt, consult me or just don’t use it. A good resource
for explanations of major philosophical concepts and issues are the various academic encyclopedias and
reference guides, which can be found at http://libguides.luc.edu/philosophy.
Paper Structure
1. In one (at most two), succinct introductory paragraph, present the problem/issue you will write about,
state your thesis on the issue, and give a brief outline of your argument for your thesis.
2. In the body of the paper, set forth your answer to the question through exposition and analysis of the
relevant texts.
3. A conclusion of less than half a page in which you summarize your analysis.
Grading: The paper will be graded on the following four standards (see paper grading form below):
1. Paper structure and format: does the overall structure of the paper make sense and flow from paragraph
to paragraph and sentence to sentence?
2. Logical coherence: does your argument contain logical errors or gaps?
3. The clarity of your analysis of the material: does the paper exhibit a strong understanding of the texts
used and issues involved?
4. Grammar, spelling, and style of your writing: does the writing inhibit the coherency and flow of
reading?
Turning in the Paper: Papers must be turned in through the assignment function in Sakai.
