The Village, by Bing West is a novel about a squad of Marines in the Southern Vietnamwhose primary focus is to train the local farmers to defend their village of about six thousand villagers. Throughout their stay in BinhNighia they encounter multiple ambushes against two hundred plus Viet Cong guerillas. The odds for these Marines to come back home was a fifty-fifty chance. During the day the villagers would perform their everyday duties, by farming and planting rice for a living, and during the night the Marines would patrol the village. Shootings happened every night from across the river where the Viet Cong battalion was located, and it was the Marines and the local villagers job to protect the village. Hence, Sgt. Sullivan stood out to me of all the other squad leaders because he exemplified most ofthe Army leadership attributes and competencies, of those: Leads, Character, Presence, and Achieves are what I saw the most in his leadership style of aggression.

Clearly, there is a reason as to why Sgt. Sullivan replaced Beebe, as squad leader because he demonstrated that he can be trusted by his squad. A perfect example of this is in Chapter six “He led a patrol to ambush at a river crossing” (p.61, para 3.). This shows that Sgt. Sullivan can lead the squad, and that he has knowledge of what he’s doing, which helps his squad build trust in him. Relating this to ROTC, as I first joined Delta Company, I did not know a single soul. But during lab I saw everything my team leader, and squad leader did, and realized that they knew what they were talking about which led me to trust them.Another perfect example is “He did not like to relyon the PFs, and he found communications with them particularly hard” (p.61 para 3.). This is an example of him leading others. Although there is a language barrier between the Vietnamese and the Americans he did not let this stop him from interfering with them. Instead, Sgt. Sullivan utilizes them as spotters, because they could spot out a Viet Cong before an American could. Sgt. Sullivan demonstrates his abilities to lead others because he could of chose to not take th…………………..
