It is credited, in some quarters, as the first play that portrayed black characters, themes and the conflicts, which surrounded the black community in the United States, at the time, in a more realistic manner. There are various themes that can be deduced from this play, including gender issues, African American social movements as well as discrimination and civil rights. In the context of gender, this play is considered as revolutionary having presented the Younger, African American family on an American stage (Freels 1).
