A Raisin in the Sun is a play that hit the theatres in March 1959, and was written by Lorraine Hansberry (Burrell 1). It is credited, in some quarters, as the first play that portrayed black characters, themes and the conflicts, which surrounded the black community in the United States, at the time, in a more realistic manner. There are various themes that can be deduced from this play, including gender issues, African American social movements as well as discrimination and civil rights. In the context of gender, this play is considered as revolutionary having presented the Younger, African American family on an American stage (Freels 1). It would be important to note that during this time in America, black audiences were non-existent. The play sets aside the many stereotypes that marked the black families as it portrays a realistic family in an unflattering manner.
