Goal: To identify and explore how a particular physical space/room/building related to Dentistry captures some truth or dynamic of that field. To identify and explain what features (layout, color, furnishings, dimensions, use of light, etc.) of the space symbolically embody that truth or dynamic. Include, in the paper, at least one picture of the space.
Basic Structure:
(a) An introduction speaking to the truth/dynamic. A moment when you learned about it or it came up. A quick meditation on that, using language to identify the truth/dynamic precisely.
(b) A description of the space, in general. Here you want to paint a picture in our mind using precise and creative language. You are not to the thesis yet. Just describing the space, vividly. Also, describe any time you’ve spend in the space: how you came to discover it, spend time in it.
(c) Then, tie (a) to (b) – that the space captures this truth or embodies this dynamic. It does so in 2-3 features (you can look at things like lighting, the layout of the room, furniture, materials used, colors, use of windows, etc.). Note: You may begin with (b), then move to (a) and then (c).
(d) Then work through each feature (from thesis) of the space, “reading” it symbolically. Write a little bit of description and then “read” that feature symbolically. As you do this, you are welcome to input visual images into the paper – not just shots of the object as a whole but particular features of it, particular corners of the room, particular furnishings.
(e) A conclusion that ties up the meditation by thinking about the space and this truth/dynamic.
