SOC 202-013, Principles of Sociology, Fall 2011
Sociology is an academic discipline which explores social behavior and human groups.
Sociologists want to know how groups and institutions affect our attitudes and behavior.
In this course, we will use the scientific method to investigate patterns of social
behavior. We will use the material presented in class to help improve our
understanding of what is happening in the real world.

CLASSROOM POLICIES
ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION
Your attendance and participation are required. I will take roll at the start of each class,
therefore it is essential that you come to class on time. Each class is worth½point of
your overall grade (see grading policy below). If you are not present when I take roll,
you will not receive credit for attending class that day. Documentation regarding
university approved absences must be submitted to me by the class session immediately
following your absence. No other exceptions apply. If you have a scheduled absence
(i.e. sports game, surgery), please notify me in advance. Those with excused absences
will not lose points for the day. For more information on university attendance policies,
see: www.ncsu.edu/policies/academic_affairs/courses_undergrad/REG02.20.3.php
HARASSMENT & CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
In order for learning to occur, we must exist in an environment where all of us feel safe
and respected. The University defines harassment as any behavior – whether from
teachers, staff or peers (other students) – that makes an individual so uncomfortable
that they cannot learn. Thus, insults, sexual advances, slurs directed against a racial,
ethnic, religious, sexual, gender, or any other group, whispered comments, disruptive
behavior and disrespectful language are all recognized as contaminating the learning
environment andWILL NOT BE TOLERATED. This also includes (but is not limited to)
the use of music devices and cell phones, working on homework for other classes, and
visiting any non-authorized websites during lab (i.e. facebook). If you feel your
learning environment is being spoiled, please inform me immediately, in person or
anonymously. Please check www.ncsu.edu/equal_op/ for more details.
