Suggested outline:
1. Introduction. This part of the essay should briefly and clearly state your main thesis. Also, you should give the reader some idea of what will follow. The best way to do that, probably, is to offer a quick sketch of the paper. There’s no need to make this part of the paper any longer than 6 or 7 sentences.
2. Introduce the Issue. Here you briefly introduce the problem that you will address. Why is it an interesting or important issue? What are the various possible views on it? Please explain the problem sufficiently so that a reader who has never heard of it would understand why one might be interested in this topic. Remember: you are not writing for me. Write to a neutral but uninformed reader.
3. Explain the Theory. Next you need to explain how one of our positive theories would try to approach the moral issue you have selected. But before you can do that, you will need to explain the theory first. You should again assume that the reader has not taken an ethics class. This section therefore lays out the basics of virtue theory, cosmopolitanism, utilitarianism, deontology or some other plausible positive view. Go slowly and make sure the reader understands the ideas.
4. Apply Theory to Issue. Explain how the theory you have just finished explaining approaches the moral issue you introduced in Section 2. Why to proponents of the theory think this is a sensible way to look at things? Here you will need to see through the eyes of the people you have described in Section 3 and show your reader how they understand the world.
5. Assessment and Discussion. Does the approach you explained in the previous section work? If so, what are some objections to it and how does it overcome them? If not, why not? Be specific and try to convince your reader of your analysis. (This is also an opportunity for you to explore your own views. But you must substantiate what you say.)
6. Conclusion. This short section wraps up any loose ends and reminds the reader what you set out to do and how you have achieved it.
And that’s it. Good luck!
