The rise of cities. Discuss the impact of technological change on industrial location from 1700-1900 (or some sub part). The putting out system was in the cottages and hence dispersed. Water was concentrated where water power was available but still not in cities as total power at any one source was small(?). The big industrial cities became with steam in the factories after 1820. Is that story correct? How do changes in technology through the period alter industrial competitiveness?

Get Help Now!- How do the impact of technology on military matters and the military’s impact back on economic matters alter national competitiveness? Take any one of the countless cases such as the use of gunpowder and the end of feudalism and the effect of this on economic behaviour, or the invention of steam powered iron clad war ship and the end of sail, or the invention of fast firing guns (Gettysburg was lost in Pickets charge which failed because the new union guns could get of four rounds against a charge rather than two as before–when two volleys were all that could be put against a charge the charge had a good chance of reaching the opposing forces). The machine gun followed and revolutionized the First World War producing slow attrition rather than fast victory (as in the Franco Prussian war of 1870) since the defence had the advantage. In the Second World War, the tank and aircraft gave the advantage back to the offence. William MacNeil, “Technology and the Pursuit of Power” is a good place to start. More futuristic is the advantage to small guerrilla forces given by the atom bomb and other technological revolutions that make modern armies able to fight global wars but ill-equipped to fight small local ones against irregular forces.
- Do a comprehensive case study of the impact of a particular general purpose technology (GPT) in history. In each case trace the origins of the technology (to the extent possible) relate the economic decisions of the agents producing the technology to the principle of maximization. Describe how the technology impacted and caused changes to the facilitating structure as described in Lipsey, Bekar and Carlaw (1998a) and Lipsey, Carlaw and Bekar (2005) and how the technology working through this structure affected the growth performance and competitiveness of the economy in which it was introduced. This case study should utilize some theoretical frame work to put GPTs in context Such as the neoclassical aggregate growth methodology or the structural-evolutionary methodology.
Some GPTs of interest are:
- The three masted sailing ship
- Water wheels (Rome versus Medieval Europe)
- Factories in the industrial revolution
- The steam engine
- Electricity
- Materials (e.g., Bronze, Iron, Steel, etc.)
- The computer
- The Laser
- Nano-technology
Other case studies will be acceptable with the permission of the instructor.
- Do a comprehensive case study of a particular government policy that was intended to facilitate the introduction of a new technology in order to improve the economy’s competitiveness. In each case determine whether the object of the policy was to increase economic growth or simply to achieve a new technology for national prestige. Determine whether the policy was consistent with the facilitating structure of the economy in which it was to be introduced or whether in was a technological leap as described in Lipsey and Carlaw (2000). A clear understanding of the differences in modelling approach discussed in Lipsey and Carlaw (2000) is required here.
Some policies of interest are:
- Patents in England prior to the industrial revolution (North and Thomas, 1973)
- Charlemagne’s policy to standardize the vernaculars in Europe (see topic two above for Dudley as a starting reference).
- Early trading monopolies in the spice trade and trade with the Americas
- The Concord
- Genetics or biotechnology
- Canadian Innovation Policy and Technology Enhancement Policy
There are many others and a number of topics will be acceptable with my permission
