In respect to the ethical implication, treating the patient against her will is a disrespect of her right of a principle of autonomy. Respect for autonomy in healthcare means freedom from coercion or manipulation of treatment if they have the right capacity to decide for themselves (Sjostrand et. Al, 2015).

Certain people are admitted to New York State psychiatric centers under the Mental Hygiene Law and are entitled to a broad array of basic rights that are absolute and cannot be limited, except for those limited by law due to a medical reason (Office of Mental Health, n.d). The rights discussed above should not be restricted as retribution or for the convenience of staff, and also, different standards are applied if the person has been admitted under the Criminal Procedure Law or Correction (Office of Mental Health, n.d).

Under Mental Health Act 2007 and the Mental health Act 1990, the patient may be held involuntarily if the court is satisfied with the reasons that the patient meets the Involuntary Standard or Emergency Standard which means that there shall be reasonable cause to believe that the person has a mental illness or possesses a substantial risk for which is likely to cause serious harm to him/ herself or others (New York State Office of Mental Health, n.d).

CLASSMATE 2:The case of a 45-yr-old wife of a physician is a complicated situation. She has been intoxicated and loud and has to be admitted to an emergency room, probably because of her current condition. However, the husband, who happens to be a physician in that hospital, orders her to be taken to the psychiatric unit against her wish. Since he requests his best friends to sign the required document to admit her, they agree because he is the husband to the patient.

The act of admitting her to a different unit over the one suitable for her was unethical. It was against ethical cords of ethics that states that physicians shall respond to the emergency patients without prejudice and communicating with the patients about their consent of treatment.
