Annotated bibliography guidelines:
Your task is to firstly review the QUT library guidelines for writing an annotated bibliography. To find these guidelines, go to the QUT Cite/Write link on the library homepage, then the QUT Write link. These guidelines provide details about what to include in the summary, evaluation and reflection, questions to consider in this style of writing and ways to begin sentences within each component of the annotated bibliography. The guidelines also provide links to other helpful sites about this topic including examples of annotated bibliographies.
The Cite/write interface was updated in 2011 year and is now much easier to use. You should use the Cite/write guide on the library homepage as the ‘premier’ referencing style guide for QUT APA (American Psychological Association) 6th.
Creating the Annotated bibliography:
Firstly, you need to select one (only one) of the following health topics.
obesity
tobacco use
alcohol use
The next task requires you to collect relevant and current evidence about your selected topic from all of the following sources.
two academic journal article (from library databases like EbscoHost/Proquest)
one print book or book chapter
the homepage of one Australian state or federal government website (this is not a single webpage or docx/pdf document from a website), relating to your chosen topic
one other website relating to your chosen topic
Then, for each source, you need to do the following:
Provide the citation (that is, the bibliographic information). You must use QUT APA as the referencing style. You can find information about QUT APA on the library homepage and the online QUT cite/write guide.
Summarise the main arguments and conclusions presented by the author about your selected topic. In the case of the web page summarise the content of the page.
Evaluate the source, that is, is the source accurate, reliable, and current?
Reflect about how useful you found this literature to be in increasing your knowledge about the topic.
NB: You cannot use direct quotes from the source in the summary,
assessment, or reflection paragraphs.
NB: You do not need to provide a reference list as you have already included
the citations as the headings to each annotation.
In the Week 5 lecture, more information will be provided about the annotated bibliography and examples of the sources will be shown. We will also practice referencing and writing an annotated bibliography in
Week 3.
