Data Collection Guidelines
Record one hour of natural conversation. This can take place in a setting of your choice. You may be a participant if you choose as long as you do not consciously manipulate the conversation. Select a group of 3 of people that you interact with regularly (family, friends…). Ask their permission to record the conversation BEFORE it takes place. With fewer participants you may have less to work with in terms of turn-taking, topic shifts, and so on. The topics you should convers with your group are:
1. Compliments: men complimenting men, men complimenting women and vice versa, and women complimenting women.
2. Forms of address between the same genders, males and males, females and females, or between different genders.
Be sure to make note of the date of the recording, the participants (do not use their real names – choose a pseudonym they want me to use), the precise location, and any background information that is needed to understand the conversation.
Transcribing Tips
After you finish receding a conversation, you will transcribe a portion of the conversation you recorded (4 pages of transcription). Your transcript should contain everything said by all participants as accurately as possible, as well as some nonverbal cues and contextual notes. Usually the beginning of the conversation is less useful than later portions because people are adjusting to being recorded. The transcript should include the date of the recording, the participants (do not use their real names – choose a pseudonym they want me to use), the precise location, and the date of the transcription. Number every fifth line. You will not be doing phonetic transcription. Hesitation phenomena (um, er, uh), discourse markers such as you know, interruptions, and well should be included. You may want to represent the pronunciation of some expressions to indicate regional or social dialects, and formality or informality, for example. This can be done by using regular English spelling conventions – runnin (running), dem (them), kinda (kind of), etc. Do not represent any difference in pronunciation (wuz) for was; lissen for listen; ekscuse for excuse). Pay attention to exactly what was said, and avoid transcribing an utterance, as you would say it rather than how the speaker said it. (This is harder to do than it sounds!) Whenever you transcribe data, you should include a key with your transcription that explains any special notation you use.
Here are some suggestions:
1• Interruptions, overlaps:
/ / enclose overlapping sections of speech. Overlapping section appears immediately above and below each other. (Some people use // // or [ ] instead.)
A: That movie was /so funny/B: /I saw it last/ night and thought I’d die!
In the above example, the notation indicates that while speaker A was saying “so funny,”
speaker B began the utterance “I saw it last night.”
2• Self-interruption, false starts: – indicates that the speaker stops an utterance in midstream. Sometimes this ends the turn, and sometimes it is followed by a new formulation of the utterance that wasbroken off. A: I didn’t want – A: I didn’t want – you don’t have to help me.
3• Pauses: …. Used to indicate a pause – the more dots, the longer the pause.
4• Unclear speech: ( ) indicates that the transcriber was unsure of what was said. If words are filled in, they are the best approximation the speaker can make. The amount of space left between parentheses indicates the approximate length of the utterance. No idea of what was said: A: They went to ( ) last Friday. Transcriber’s guess: A: They went to (The Slippery Noodle?) last Friday.
5• italics indicates whispered utterance
6• boldface indicates increased volume
7• [ ] encloses information on nonverbal communication or context [laughing] [playing with toy on desk] [pointing at interviewer] [nodding]
8• non-English utterances: if a participant uses words or phrases in a language otherthan English, you may want to use a different font to represent themBe consistent in the notations you use in your transcription system and include a key.
