In Unit 1 (Class Discussions) of this course, you discussed a variety of applications/technologies that you could implement in your future classroom. However, implementing fun technology for the sake of using fun technology isn’t effective unless it can help students achieve the standards that you’re trying to teach.

In this unit, Unit 2 (Lesson Planning), we’re going to discuss educational standards that teachers have students meet in their classroom AND the process (through lesson planning) that they go through to plan their day.

In 2016, Congress passed the Every Student Succeeds Act or ESSA. With ESSA, each state will determine what type of education standards their students will encounter in their public education setting. As you may have heard or seen, Common Core is a controversial set of standards that many states are choosing to adopt. Most likely, if you work in the public education setting, you will utilize the Common Core State Standards. Please watch the following videos below on the Common Core State Standards for a better overview.

Reflection — Common Core Standards

You just reviewed two video presentations for the Common Core State Standards. In your reflection, which should be at least two full pages, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 inch font, please answer the following questions:

Here are the questions to consider:

1) What?

What did you just learn? No judgment; just facts

2) So What?

Why is this important? Process the information

3) Now what?

How will this impact me as a teacher?

Please answer your response by submitting to this assignment.

Question 2: Video Tutorials on How To Write a Lesson Plan

Dear Ed Tech Students,

Now that we’ve covered and introduced the Common Core State Standards, we’re now going to move into creating a lesson plan. The following links below are video tutorials on how to write a lesson plan. You’ll notice that in the actual lesson plan template, there will be a section for the standard (which truly is the most important aspect of your plan!)

In the videos below, I’m using the application Jing to create a screencast video. You’ll be utilizing this same feature in Unit 2/Phase 2.

Please watch the following two video tutorials on how to write a lesson plan.

Part 1: https://www.screencast.com/t/MjUyOWUzNDkt

Part 2: https://www.screencast.com/t/MTFkMDM5Y

In the next section of the unit, you’ll find a hard copy of the Lesson Plan Template that I used in the video. Please feel free to use that as a reference later on.

When finished with the Lesson Plan videos, please submit your two page written reflection on Unit 2 Lesson Planning in this assignment.

Reflection — Lesson Plan & Technology

Dear Future Lesson Planners,

In this unit, we learned about what a lesson plan is and how it should be structured for students.

For this reflection, please answer the following three questions in separate paragraphs (at least two pages, Time New Roman, Double Spaced, 12 inch font.). Submit your Lesson Plan here.

What?

What did you learn about lesson plans? Just the facts

So what?

Why is this important to you as a teacher?

Now what?

If you didn’t notice, we haven’t talked much about technology and education. In fact, in the video tutorials, technology was hardly if ever mentioned. What was mentioned was traditional face-to-face techniques to use with students (like discussions, writing in a journal, working on a poster, etc). With that being said, think about how you could incorporate technology into a lesson plan. What parts specifically of the lesson could you use technology? What are your thoughts?

Question 3: Video Tutorial on Jing

Dear Ed Tech Students,

You just watched two videos on the structure of creating a lesson plan. For your next project, you will be creating your own Jing Screencast Video on “How to Create a Lesson Plan.” Please visit the Jing website (https://www.techsmith.com/jing-tool.html). and watch the video tutorial on the front page.

After watching, please download Jing. Make sure you you download the correct version based on your operating system (PC or MAC).

You do not have to upgrade to the “Pro” version; the free version is just fine.

Please keep Jing throughout the remainder of the course; I guarantee you’ll be using it for years to come.

Jing Response on Key Parts of Lesson Plan

Dear Students,

Hope you’re finding Jing to be very useful! It has truly transformed the way I instruct students — both online and face-to-face. I’ve also used it a million times in my personal life for a variety of projects/instructions/videos.

Directions:

1) For this assignment, please create a “How To Create a Lesson Plan” screencast using Jing. You DO NOT have to create our own lesson (i.e. I’m not looking for you to find a Common Core Standard and create a lesson plan on a subject that you’re interested in). Rather, I want you to utilize some type of word-processing application (like Google Slides/Word/PowerPoint/Prezi, etc) and go through the different parts of the lesson plan JUST as I did with my Jing video. Yes, it’s essentially the same! If Jing doesn’t work on your computer, please Google “Screen-Cast-O-Matic” and try this great alternative as well!

2) Imagine that your audience is a group of college students learning how to create a lesson plan for the first time.

3) When you’re done, please create a Screencast of the video and paste the LINK (PLEASE TEST BEFORE SUBMITTING) into this assignment page.
