Philosophy Profile & Research Questions

As an educator, my goal is to provide for each child’s individual needs and work along side their parents in a way that is both respectful and developmentally appropriate. A parent is a child’s first teacher, the first one to model behaviors, actions, interactions and so much more. I believe in providing multiple learning experiences and taking the time to plan my curriculum, activities and interactions accordingly. Children and families are the forefront of education and our foundation. My educational philosophy is to inspire students to reach their potential, to do their best, be respectful of themselves and others, to be independent and love learning, to lead happy and healthy lives. To do so, it is important that we understand that “the successful development of children is a social, not just family, responsibility” (Framework Institute, 2005). Teaching Style “Not only does cooperative learning result in higher achievement and greater long-term retention of what is learned, it also tends to result in higher level reasoning (critical thinking)process gain (more new ideas, strategies and solutions generated);Transfer of what is learned from one situation to another; Positive attitudes toward the subject being studied; And time on task (Erwin, 2004, p.75-76)The teaching style I use in my classroom and outside of the classroom is Cooperative learning coupled with Zone of Proximal Development. Cooperative learning is a learning processwhere children are able to work with one another in groups but focuses on strengths and weaknesses of children and uses Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development to place children in these groupings. between (a) what the learners can learn on their own and (b) what they can learn under the guidance of a facilitator or others in the learning environment” (Clapper, 2015, p.150). In using the two together, it is understood that hands on activities and activities where students are able to work with one another towards a common learning objective is the key. This allows for me, as the teacher, to interact with the students “A ZPD is created in the learning process when a learner interacts in cooperation with others, but lags behind in internal developmental (emphasis added) processes (Vygotsky, 1978, p. 90)”“
