Understanding the audience is critical step in developing and deploying new data visualizations. Knowing the audience helps in creating rich content which has the required information. The data in this work is provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which wishes to come up with a dashboard to provide an understanding of the safety of different vehicle manufacturers. According to NHTSA, there is need to record the number of recalls made year after year. Power BI is a Microsoft business intelligence tool that imports data in different forms such as Excel, CSV or word form. The data must however be cleaned before being used. The file being used is in excel but easily uploaded in the BI tool.

The subsequent section depicts some of the tools that have been developed in the power BI tool as well as the trend analysis of the number of recalls made for the different years.

The trend analysis shows the simple high-level view used to compare data for the specific years. The second visual breaks down the vehicles as a result if the increase in recalls and the vehicle manufacturer used. The visual allows the department of transportation to ensure there are more regulations required to guarantee the safety of the driver. The visual which shows that Ford and Chevrolet are the most notable offenders when it comes to number of recalls is provided in the visual below

The last visual is in the form of a donut that breaks down the recall percentages by the car manufacturer. From the data, Ford and Chevrolet record the highest number of recalls at 29.17% and 24.58% respectively.

Audience Needs

The overall message for each audience will change based on what they expect and the ease with which they want to understand the message. Some audience may find the donut easier to understand while others may regard the trend analysis as easier to understand. The presentation will thus depend on the which audience is being targeted. The audience may not be familiar with the different terminologies being used. However, the use of visual representation makes it easier for the audience to have a clear understanding of the information being put forth in the data analysis.

The educational level will play an important role in determining the level of understanding of the target audience. The competent audience will likely understand the new terminologies with ease as well as find more meaning in the visual presentations as compared to the unlearned. Gender may also play a role in the understanding of presented visualization as men tend to have a better understanding of aspects in the automotive industry as compared to women. Cultural diversity may have little impact to the visualization.

Data Visualization Methods

The data visualization approaches selected in this work is appropriate for the specific audience. Trend analysis is targeted at business people who may wish to have a clear understanding of the number of recalls reported within a specific timeframe and the possible impact it may have on the business. Similarly, the comparative analysis and the donut method are both to ensure that the message being communicated is effective to the audience which prefers comparative analysis.

There are notable strengths linked to the data visualization methods used. All of them are easy to interpret even to a person who may not have extensive knowledge of data analysis. Secondly, they help provide a good trend which is easy for interpretation. However, they have a disadvantage in that they require some level of skills for proper analysis and interpretation.
