Lean production adds customer value by eliminating process wastes such as overproduction, excess motion, unnecessary process steps and defective products.  Activities that are considered to be value-adding are used to change materials and information into the customer’s desired end result.   The term waste is used to describe anything that does not add value from the perspective of the customer.
