Online assignment #9: thesis and organization
The online assignment for this week has two parts and asks you to consider thesis and organizational possibilities.
First, access and read the document “Thesis statements for advertisements.” Then, create the three possible thesis statements as directed in the document. It is relatively unlikely that any of these will become the thesis of your essay—two of them are limited in scope and the last one, though it combines the limiting aspects of the first two, is meant to stimulate thought in a fun and provocative manner, not, necessarily, lead to a workable thesis for the essay. Record and label your three thesis statements as the first part of this assignment.
Second, read the sample student essay about the Trojan condom advertisement. Consider also our class discussion today about possible organization schemes for the ad analysis essay. Then, write a brief description of the organization used in the sample essay. This will probably take two or three sentences. Finally, discuss whether this type of arrangement or some variation of it seems useful for your analysis essay. Explain your assessment; that is, tell why you feel the organizational pattern in the sample paper does or does not appear useful to you. Justify your response and explanation with specific references to your advertisement.
As usual, this assignment should be a minimum of 250 words in length, but don’t get too wordy—remember, you’ve also got a draft to write this weekend!
