Purpose

The purpose of this assignment will be to gain an understanding of your new role as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP nurse leader), specifically to address the scope of your new responsibilities and how you will be prepared to meet the challenges to transform practice through the application of your new knowledge, as well as make a substantial contribution to improve healthcare system costs, quality, and access.

The DNP is the newest nursing degree andemerged in the midst of calls for greater accountability in the healthcare system.  This educational shift toward doctorial preparedness represents a logical response to a national call to action around contemporary healthcare agendas. The supporters of the DNP movement believe this degree will provide leadership in a variety of settings, including nurse executives, quality managers, clinical program directors, and nursing faculty positions, as well as bring evidence-based practice and policy changes to the clinical realm and provide practice leadership roles. Your DNP degree will be acknowledged as a terminal degree with an intellectual base focused on leadership, evidence-based practice, and policy changes in the clinical realm.

This assignment is to be completed by the end of Week 3 of this course and will require the following objectives to be addressed.

• Describe why you have pursued the DNP degree and what changes in your professional stance will change as a result of obtaining the degree.
• Identify and describe your ideal positionand how you will transform practice or contribute to improving the healthcare system in terms of cost, quality, and access.
• In your new role as a DNP prepared nurse, describe what skills and knowledge you will bring forth in the healthcare or academic setting.
• List two of the Eight Recommendations for Transforming the Future (2011) that resonate most with you and in alignment with your ideal position.

Criteria for Format and Special Instructions

1. The paper (excluding the title page and references page) should be 8 pages. Points will be lost for not meeting the length requirement. Estimated page length for each section of the paper is outlined in the description of the assignment section.
2. Font and sizes acceptable: 12 point, Times New Roman or 11 point Ariel.
3. Use of the following subheadings to organize the content of your paper.

6. A minimum of eight scholarly references must be used. Scholarly references need to be current, 5–8 years or less (anonymous authors or web pages are not acceptable).
7. Title page, body of paper, and reference page must follow APA guidelines as found in the sixth edition of the manual; this includes the use of headings for each section or topic of the paper.
8. Ideas and information that come from readings must be cited and referenced correctly.
9. Rules of grammar, spelling, word usage, and punctuation are followed and consistent with formal written work as found in the sixth edition of the APA manual.
10. This paper is worth 250 total points and will be graded on quality of topic, quality of paper information, use of citations, grammar, and sentence structure.
