Organization: As with the other writing tasks you have completed this semester, the proposal requires you to think critically about the rhetorical situation—kairos, purpose, audience, and the available means of persuasion (including rhetorical appeals and tools). However, this genre also requires rhetorical moves unique to itself. Most proposals have an organization that follows this pattern:
an introductory paragraph or two that provides an overview of the proposal, establishes an ethos appropriate to the situation, and sets the tone of the project
a statement or narrative of the problem, providing convincing evidence that the problem is kairotic
a proposed plan to help solve the problem, using concrete information such as method, timelines, data, steps, cost, equipment or facilities needed, wages or personnel required, feasibility, consequences or expected results, or any other means of persuasion
a conclusion that summarizes the main points and asks for a course of action, using emotional appeals
Now, practice some invention strategies you learned about in this lesson and in chapter 7 of Writing and Rhetoric to help you come up with a proposal. For example, open a Word document and write down ten problems from your own experience as a student, a family member, a citizen, a neighbor, or a member of an organization. Brainstorm possible solutions to those problems on your Word document. Think about your problem in the context of the fifteen common topics in Writing and Rhetoric. You may think about questions you could ask these potential problems using common topics. How, for example, could this problem be categorized? What problems is it similar to? What caused the problem? What are the consequences of the problem? How serious is it? How did it begin? What potential authorities on the subject exist? Can the problem be understood statistically?
