A successful research paper will combine the skills we used during the close reading assignment with current research in the field. This is your chance to put your ideas in conversation with the ideas of scholars/readers who have analyzed these texts before you. Arguments can be made starting with close reading practices and then including research as it supports your argument. Arguments can also be made starting with another scholar’s research. You are welcome to use your observations/close reading conclusions to agree or disagree with current scholarship.
Remember: Your voice should lead your paper. The inclusion of research should be to support your ideas/conclusions about a text. This means using strong topic and transition sentences, explaining how you are using various outside sources, and your close reading analysis of the primary text.
This paper can be on any work we have read this semester EXCEPT for the work you have already written on for your close reading paper.
The paper should be typed in MLA 8 format (12 point font size, Times New Roman font, 1” margins, double spaced). You will need a Works Cited page that includes an MLA 8 citation of your story, in addition to your 4 academic sources. All in-text citations should use MLA 8 citation. Consult Purdue OWL online for current MLA 8 rules. Any quoted and/or paraphrased material must be cited in MLA 8 to avoid plagiarism.
