Both Socrates and Martin Luther King, Jr. are recognized as champions of
civil disobedience, a form of non-violent political protest, because of their behavior
in the face of the law. Their respective statements from prison cells are cited as the
perfected expressions of inspirational figures—legendary martyrs—who challenge
the social orders of their day. But their positions actually differ, perhaps
significantly.
Write an essay explaining the relation between the positions
set forth in Crito and “Letter from a Birmingham City Jail.” Analyze
the texts and reflect on your analysis – this will yield an
interpretation.
Your treatment should take root in at least four passages of text–two from Plato and
two from King. One pair of passages should show these two thinkers in agreement
or alliance; another pair should show these two thinkers at odds or in disagreement.
Quotations should be employed to advance your argument; all quotations should be
cited. Do this formally, in Chicago citation style.

Your essay should be carefully organized with a purposeful paragraph
scheme. If the ordering, arrangement, and content of your paragraphs do not
change as you work your paper, you are not working critically with your ideas. Your
essay should be thesis-driven: that means that your conclusion—the point your
essay argues—will be stated outright early on and successive paragraphs will work
