The objective of this assignment is to reflect upon how race and ethnicity appear in everyday life.

To do this assignment, you will need to view the film “Race:  The Power of an Illusion” as well as to consider your own experience of race and ethnicity.  “Race:  The Power of an Illusion” is available through the library website using your library card.

 

In your own words, articulate the argument that the film makes about race.   What examples did it give of instances of prejudice?  What would be an instance or instances of discrimination in the film?  How does the film suggest that there is systemic racism in the United States?  Does the film argue that certain racial or ethnic groups have more control over a master narrative of race or ethnicity?  How does the film try to address issues of race?

Then, tie the film to circumstances or situations that are part of your daily environment or life experience.   Consider how race or ethnicity has ‘appeared’ or become visible to you in your own life.  How do you see the influence of race and ethnicity or the role that it plays in our culture?  What would be an example or an instance in which ‘race’ or ‘ethnicity’ came to light?   Your aim in this part of the paper is to reflect sociologically on what is taken for granted about race or ethnicity in our world.
