INFO 5670: Disaster/Emergency Management for Information Professionals
There are four course requirements: (1) Reading Reaction, (2) Disaster Information
Tools, (3) Course Project, and (4) Chat.
Reading Reaction (20%)
Purpose
To provide the students with background to issues in
disaster/emergency management.
Description
The readings are organized into four (4) sets, designed to enhance the lectures and assignments. You will submit one (1) document that
includes your reactions to the required readings for all four (4) sets. You can access the readings through the Reading List linked on the course homepage.
Set 1: Disasters, Victims, and First Responders
Set 2: Information Needs, Surveillance Systems, and Others
Set 3: Outreach and Resources to Disaster Victims and
Responders
Set 4: Disaster/Emergency Planning and Lessons Learned
Instructions
For each set, read all of the required readings. Read all optional readings that apply to your chosen topic for your course project
(however, you do not have to include the optional readings in your reaction).
Compose one (1) document that includes the reactions to all four (4) sets. Each reaction included in the document should follow the instructions outlined below; therefore, your document will have approximately 2000-2800 words.
For each of the four (4) sets of readings, read the required articles, and create a reaction of at least 500, but no more than 700 words, that includes:

1. a summative evaluation of the theme of the required articles you
read in each set
2. a mention of how your own life knowledge and experiences contribute to what you learned from the articles.
3. parenthetical references (example: (Smith, 2004)); feel free to combine references (example Smith, 2004; Alvarez, 2005; Martinez, 2007)
4. reference list at the end; you may copy and paste the list of readings directly from the assignment page in the course.
Submission
Submit your document to the appropriate dropbox.
Disaster Information Tools (20%)
Purpose
To expose you to key information tools related to
disasters/emergencies.
Description
You will be completing an assessment with questions related to key information tools.
Instructions
Answer the questions using the specific instructions presented in the
assessment “Disaster Information Tools.”
Submission
Once you answer all of the questions in the Disaster Information Tools
assessment, submit the assessment. Be sure to save your answers to each of the questions.
Course Project (50%)
Purpose
To develop an understanding of a specific disaster/emergency event
and apply disaster information management principles to the specific disaster/emergency event.
Description
The project will be developed in four (4) parts.
Part 1: Overview of disaster/emergency and the information needs of victims and responders involved in the disaster/emergency
Part 2: Resources to meet the information needs of victims and
responders involved in a disaster/emergency
Part 3: Disaster/emergency outreach program
Part 4: Disaster/emergency management planning
Instructions
Each student will be assigned one (1) of the topics from the list below.
Based on the assigned topic, each student will select a real- life event
to focus on involving that disaster/emergency within the past
5 years (i.e. tornado – tornado in Moore, OK in 2013). You will develop each part of the course project based on the assigned topic and selected real-life event.
