Your focus should be on analyzing a specific text by an American author. The literary text itself is the primary source. In order to analyze and interpret it, you need to find three or four scholarly sources that help you. These need to be cited using the Modern Language Association parenthetical citation format. These research sources should also be on the Works Cited page.

You should not cite Cliff’s Notes or the online equivalent (enotes, freebooknotes, com, or any site that provides essays). Don’t expect to find everything you need online. Ask a librarian to help you locate chapters in books or articles in scholarly journals. Also, Wikipedia (or any other encyclopedia) is not a good source for a college-level research paper since they only provide common knowledge. (And Wikipedia is not even reliable in doing that.)

If you can’t find good research sources that analyze and interpret in some detail, you should change your topic. Don’t turn in a paper that only contains your own ideas.

The final paper should be 5-6 pages (doublespaced). Also hand in a photocopy of relevant pages from the source that you used the most. Highlight or indicate in some way which passages you used. You only need to turn in 5-10 pages from the research sources (not the literary text) that you have taken ideas or direct quotes from.

The topic I have chosen is an analysis of Huckleberry Finn. More specifically, Huck and Jim’s relationship throughout the book with an emphasis on how each sees slavery and racism and how that is interpreted today.
