This article chronicles the history, describes the present, and reveals the future of the counseling profession. It explores how and when this profession came into existence and how it has developed into what it is today.

The human services field in one of its earliest forms was seen in England with the Elizabethan Poor Laws of 1601 (Martin, 2014); however, this legislation only provided aid for the poor and did not yet emphasize any intervention besides punishment. We start to see glimpses of the modern counselor in the late 1800’s.

The Charity Organization Society (COS) was founded in 1870 because of an overwhelming disapproval of the social welfare system of the time. This organization sent out individuals to act as “case workers”.

It wastheir job to visit the aid applicant’s home, investigate and uncover the cause of the family’s hardships, and then provide them with the framework to correct it (Trattner, 1998).

It isn’t until the emergence of psychoanalysis, in the early 1900’s, that we see specialized, one-on-one diagnosis and treatment being performed again (Schacter, Gilbert & Wegner, 2009). We will thenexamine modern counseling practices and career fields and seek to gain insight about the future of the field.
