George Bush narrowly won the Presidential election, by popular vote. This election was marked as the 3 rd closest presidential election and joined the 1876 and 1960. These were the most contested election in American history. “Gore won the popular vote, amassing 50.9 million votes to Bush’s 50.4 million but fell short in the electoral college, 267 to 271” (Henretta, p.963). During an election there is more to just showing up to a ballot box and voting for a candidate. There is Electoral votes and this system is called the The Electoral College. According to Walbert, “Each state has as many electors as it has senators and members of the House of Representatives, for a total of 538 (The District of Columbia gets three electors even though it has no representation in Congress.)” (2015). So under the 23 rd Amendment of the Constitution, the District of Columbia is given 3 votes as stated above. So electoral votes are based on states and each state is given points.
