Society generally believes that all people have a right to health care” (Edelman, Kudzma, Mandle, 2010, P 32). “Educational programs, research projects, and clinical practices in transcultural nursing continue to be established and implemented to provide culturally sensitive, safe, competent, and meaningful care to people of diverse and similar cultures” (Edelman et al. P 32).
Health is a universal term that can have a significantly different meaning to people of diverse backgrounds. It can be defined by an individual’s beliefs, ethnicity, cultural, traditions and health practices. Maintaining good health requires cooperation and collaboration between the person seeking care and the person providing care Using a heritage assessment tool can give the healthcare provider some insight into a person’s healthcare beliefs and practices ,to provide the best care possible and to help avoid misunderstandings.
This paper will take a look at the healthcare practices of three families from different ethnic backgrounds. Family X is Italian /French American, Family Y, Hispanic American and Family Z ‘are African Americans. Family X is Italian French American. His Great Grandparents migrated to the United States (USA) in the 1920’s for economic reasons. His father’s family came from France and His Mother’s family came from Italy both of his parents were born in the USA as were their parents. English is spoken and read in the household.
He and his children do not speak or read Italian or French. During his childhood the family‘s traditions and practices were influenced more by the Italian side of the family (his mother’s), simply because her family lived closer and traditionally Italian‘s are more involved in each other’s families.
His Father, whose background is French did not have as many relatives living in the USA or near their home, Traditional Italian families are patriarchal in society, but matriarchal in the home. This is true in Mr. X’s family.
Every Sunday it was an Italian tradition in his home to eat the main meal at noon with his immediate family and many of his aunts, uncles and cousins from his mother’s side of the family. Family meals were important and wine was served at every meal.
Wine is considered food in both the Italian and French cultural and is thought to have curative, preventative and medicinal value and was even watered down and served to children……………
