INSTRUCTIONS: First essay: The themes and biographical figures for the first half of the course come from the 17th through the 19th century in American culture: Winthrop, Jefferson, Emerson, etc. are all long dead. For your first essay, choose one person, one prose text, one poem, and one painting (or other visual artifact, such as sculpture or architecture) from prior to the year 1900 to describe an aspect of American culture which is “extinct,” an idea, a value, a way of life, that is no longer part of American culture, or is such a small part as to be unnoticeable. Also discuss whether the decline of your theme is a good or a bad thing, or how good and bad are mixed in the change you see. For both essays, at least three of the four “texts” (person / painting / prose text / poem) should be from figures we have covered in the class, though the specific work (painting, poem) need not be one we covered in the class. I chose to write about: Henry David Thoreau, and my theme is: ‘The forgotten Beauty of Nature’. I loved the way Thoreau explained the beauty and happiness that he found in Walden and how he found beauty in simple nature in the most natural things that we have forgotten.
