United Nations Leadership

On 13 October 2016 the United Nations formally appointed Antonio Guterres as the next secretary-general. This appointment overlooked seven women candidates, and affirmed a gender bias against women within the UN. How does this decision reflect larger ongoing global gender inequities around the world?

Some questions to think about:

What role do historical attitudes toward women play in the UN decision-making regarding their appointment of secretary-general? What role do women play around the world? How have feminist movements in the global north and global south made a difference in recent decades? What, if any, are the connections between gender inequality and global inequality more generally? How can global concepts and ideas from the course be used to respond to these questions?
