Guidelines: General Analytic Writing Rubric
Evaluators should rank each piece of writing on the following criteria on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 4 (highest)
- Introduction
1 = no or poor introduction.
2= some introduction; nothing beyond a forecast.
3= clear introduction; with some forecast.
4= introductiongrasps reader’s attention (engages the reader) and forecasts all major points.
- Paragraph development
1 = no clear paragraphs; unclear topic sentence; poor development;
2 = poor paragraphs with unclear topic sentence; multiple topics; little development
3 = some structure and development of paragraphs and/or some with clear topic sentences or focus,
but not consistently.
4 = paragraphs are consistently well developed, with a clear topic sentence and appropriate number
of sentences that provide examples and develop points.
- Transitions
1 = no or poor transition; poor flow
2 = little transition between paragraphs; poor flow
3 = some transition or flow between paragraphs; partial structure to argument
4 = strong and/or consistent transition between points in essay; strong flow
- Variation of sentences
1 = no variation of sentences; poor monotonous use of sentence type. (length/ complexity).
2 = little variation of sentences; monotonous use of sentence type. (length/ complexity).
3 = some variation of sentences. Sentences of varying length or type, but not varied effectively.
4 = effective variation of sentence length and type.
- Spelling and grammar
1 = many spelling and/or grammatical mistakes.
2 = some spelling and/or grammatical mistakes.
3= a few spelling and/or grammatical mistakes.
4 = no spelling and/or grammatical mistakes.
- Coherence
1 = lack of coherence; i.e. mismatch between the report and the body; tangents
2 = occasional tangents; repetition
3 = a few tangents; repetition
4 = every paragraph works to support the report; “linked” paragraphs
- Articulation of report
1 = no or poor articulation of report
2 = little articulation of report.
3 = some clear articulation of report
4 = clear and sound articulation of report or argument.
- Conclusion
1 = no or poor conclusion or summary of argument
2 = some conclusion or summary of argument
3 = clear summary of points made, but nothing beyond summary; no broad conclusions/lessons
4 = a conclusion going beyond a clear summary of what was written in the body of the essay.
- In-Text citation and references
1= No citation at All.
2= Only some reference are cited.
3= References are written correctly according to APA style of citation.
4= References and in-text are cited correctly according to APA style of citation.
- Subject Matter Relevancy
1= No or Poor Relevancy to the Topic.
2= little or inadequate discussion of the topic.
3= Some discussion on the topic.
4= Sufficient discussion of the topic.
