The points below are suggestions regarding the content of each chapter and follow the standard format for the reporting of much research, which you should be familiar with by now.  Note that these are neither a prescriptive nor an exhaustive list of headings for you to follow mechanically; you need to decide the exact content and structure of each section that is most appropriate to the subject matter of your research.  You also need to decide what the actual headings should be, for instance, what exactly are you going to describe as the background to your topic in your introduction?  The sub-headings within each chapter should be specific and not generic.

Before you start writing is it a good idea to develop a detailed table of contents that contains section and sub-section headings so that you can review the structure of your project for comprehensiveness of content and logical order.  It is also a good idea to assign word lengths to each section or chapter to ensure that each has the appropriate length.  It is impossible to give exact guidance about the word length of each section as this will depend upon the particular nature of your project, but as a rule of thumb a section that is very short or very long compared to others indicates that not enough/too much weight has been given it.

  Abstract

This should clear and concise contain a summary of all of the key aspects of your research project:

• Aim and objectives (or hypothesis)
• What the research consisted of and why it ‘needed’ doing
• Methods used, subjects and sample size if appropriate
• What the results showed (in more than a few sentences) and their originality
• What your conclusions are based on these results, including implications for further research and/or practice
