Take Home Exam on Salvation Custom Essay
The due date of this take home exam is specified in your syllabus. I expect your essay to be printed, using 1” margins. Points will be deducted from any late papers. You need to cite any material that is not your own words. Material given in class can be cited informally in parentheses; for example: (Lewis, 125) or (Johnson, “Lectures __ on Salvation”). Any other sources must be appropriately cited. This paper is worth 75 points, or just under 20% of your final grade. Penalty for plagiarism is failure of the course. Please consult the Code of Academic Honesty for more information about plagiarism.
Expect to write about three or four pages. The following parts should comprise a tidy essay; you may label them, however, according to their parts.
Summarize in your own words the Catholic understanding of Salvation as it was presented to you in class. For this paper you will need to make careful use of C.S. Lewis, Athanasius and the “Lecture Notes on Salvation.”
1. Christian tradition defines the human being as both created in the “image of God” and estranged from God because of Original Sin. Describe the Fall making direct use of the Biblical Account of the Fall, C.S. Lewis, and St. Athanasius. In particular you should stress how sin affects the character (Lewis) of the fallen human being.
2. In order to detail any description of Salvation, one must have a sense of what we are being saved from. Using Lewis as a starting point, we have mentioned Salvation as Deliverance from a Court-room scene (forensic), a Debt, and a Hole. Speaking of the third of these, describe Original Sin as a type of corruption of the mind that can be its own punishment. Here, you should rely most heavily on Athanasius, but also make use of Lewis, the lecture notes and the Biblical Account.
3. Although nearly all Christians agree on what is Salvation, there is wide disagreement on the mechanics of Salvation – that is, how Salvation works in the lives of individual believers. Begin with a brief description of Salvation. Given that sin, according to Athanasius and Catholic Tradition, affects both the human Intellect and Will, Salvation must address both of these human powers in order for it to be effective. In your final section on Salvation, describe the Catholic understanding of Justification (Righteousness) and Sanctification (Holiness) – the two sides of the coin of Salvation – as described in your Third Lecture on Salvation. I suggest you begin with the Chart given in these notes.
