This essay exam is intended to test your ability to integrate concepts and examples from the readings, lectures, team assignments and analysis assignments from the entire class. It should be at least 900 words in length. For the essay, you will describe an ethnographic research project you would like to do. YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THE RESEARCH. Just describe the research project, addressing the various questions listed below.
As with the first essay, if you are using the texts from class, you do not need to include full citations, as long as you make it clear where the information is coming from. Thus, you could write “in Veiled Sentiments, this happened” or “Khosravi argues….” PLEASE include page numbers if you are quoting something or citing a specific example from the books (or you will have points deducted). You should not need to use materials from outside the course, but if you do, you should cite them fully. The assignment is worth 150 points.
1. Begin your essay with an introductory paragraph that briefly describes a cultural group that has suffered from either structural or symbolic violence (or both), and that you think that ethnographic research and writing could help us to understand better. Projects that do not explain what type of structural or symbolic violence you believe is involved, or that do not involve ethnographic research (including getting to know a group of people well by spending a lot of time with them) will not score well. You do not need to check your topic with me. 40 points.
2. Then, discuss how who you are and your attitude toward this cultural group will affect the type of research you can conduct. For example: in what ways are you similar and dissimilar from the group you wish to study? Are you a native anthropologist or “halfie,” like Abu-Lughod? Would you take an activist stance on your issue, as Robin Sheriff and Seth Holmes did? In other words, how might who you are shape the things you find and your interpretation? 40 points
3. Select the ethnographer we have read in class who used the methods you would think would be most useful for studying your topic. For example, would you conduct 2-3 day interviews with individuals who fill different roles in their community, as Marjorie Shostak did in Nisa? Or, would you hang out in public places, as Sharam Khosravi did in Young and Defiant in Tehran? Or, would you live with a family for an extended period of time to witness their most intimate moments, as Lila Abu-Lughod did in Veiled Sentiments? Or, will your study be most like Holmes’ research, in which you conduct research in multiple sites to better understand a mobile population? Compare and contrast your plan with the practices with those of just one (or maximum, two), anthropologist(s) we have studied whose methods are most likely to help you understand your issue. There should be some evidence that you have thought through what type of information you are hoping to get, and what sorts of methods might be most useful in getting that information (for example, do not tell me that you will live with a family to understand what goes on in a public school classroom). 40 points
4. Finally, 30 points will be used to grade your delivery – grammar, proper use of citations, and length. Essays that do not engage with the issues of ethnographic research and knowledge as we have covered them in class will not get a good grade. I want this paper to be as perfect as possible.
