As we will discuss, synthesis is the act of evaluating multiple sources and making a claim based on those sources. Research is often about synthesis as you need to look at what many people have said about your topic to see what patterns emerge.
Building on the theme of this course, political rhetoric, I want you to examine the lyrics of three songs by a single artist looking for their political rhetoric. Your goal is to look for what kind of message the three songs you pick are possibly sending. For example, if I look at the songs of the Beatles, I can see a trend in some of the songs, such as “Eleanor Rigby,” “She’s Leaving Home,” and “Nowhere Man.” In this case the lyrics show how people are effected by being overlooked; they highlight the loneliness of being excluded. Though this might not seem like a big political idea, it is part of how people interact with each other. Also, note that not all Beatles songs explore this idea, but these three do. You should make sure the three songs you are using have a consistent theme you can prove using the lyrics of the songs. These songs do not have to come from the same album, or even the same songwriter, though they should be from the same performing artists.
Please do refrain for using a religious theme. Religion and politics, at least in America, are supposed to be separate, and even if you believe otherwise I do not. I want you to focus on political rhetoric free from religion. Religious rhetoric relies on faith over logic. This is part of what makes religion valuable in our society, but the lack of logic makes it a problem in a class where you are to learn how to read and create logical arguments using language. Your thesis, which should explain what political message the three songs are sending, is due via email before class on 8/26. Three hard copies of a full draft (4 pages long) are due in class on 9/2. Failure to turn in the thesis will result in -10 points on the final grade. The same is true for failing to bring three hard copies of your draft to class on 9/2.
As you will find is standard, I expect your paper to follow the following formatting rules:
Double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font. Disable “Add extra space after paragraph” in Word 2003 and after.
1” margins all around. Those on Word 2007 and earlier should check their settings as the default is larger.
A header with your name, the assignment name, the class (ENGL 1102), and the date.
A title, centered under the header.
Your last name and the page number in the upper right hand corner of each page.
Four (4) full pages in length, NOT including the Works Cited or Consulted. I lower the final grade of a paper by 1 grade level (a B+ becomes a B) for each half page you are under the total.
You must directly quote from each song in the paper with a proper in-text citation.
A works cited page that has a proper bibliographic entry for each song, and any outside research you mention in your paper.
A works consulted page with any works you looked at but did not cite (OPTIONAL).
