The introduction should lead into the topic of your paper; include background information, the importance of your topic and a general overview of your subject.
Discussion
Present a logical sequence of information about the subject and discuss it; build your case and support it.
References should be given in the text to show where your information came from. DO NOT use footnotes. I want you to use science-style writing.
Direct quotes are rarely, if ever, used in scientific papers, so, DO NOT use direct quotes. Put the information in your own words and attribute the information to the author you got it from. You should use the following citation form in the text (these are given in bold to point out the style, do not use bold in your paper):
Citation Examples:
ENT 100 Fall 2016 4
If there is a single author then you would simply give the author’s last name and the date of the publication. Do not separate the author from the date by a comma:
Sherlock Holmes was active in London in 1850 (Watson 1988).
The following citation form is used if there are three or more authors. You may also use the first author’s name followed by “et al.” in the references if there are more than three authors; if two authors give both their names, for example Powell and Hogue 1989.
There are 4,500 species of noctuid moths in North America (Powell and Hogue 1989).
For a website, give the name of the author plus the date given on the site, or if there is no author or date given then use the current year and list the author as anonymous.
In 1850, Sherlock Holmes discovered Professor Moriarty’s headquarters (Anonymous 2006).
Conclusions
In this section you will give a final overview of the subject, presenting your final concluding remarks – the overall conclusions that you have drawn from your research. This is not the place for new information.
References
1. Use the following style for citing different kinds of references at the end of the paper.
2. Give references for papers or books etc. that you actually cite in the text of your paper.
3. Use the author’s last name and initials for the first and middle names.
4. ONLY capitalize the first word and any pronouns in book and article titles.
5. A minimum of 5 references are required, only 2 of which can be websites. By websites I do not mean electronic journals.
6. DO NOT refer to lectures, anyone’s lectures.
All references should be listed together in alphabetical order. DO NOT sort them by the following categories; these are just examples of the correct form for the reference:
Journals:
Powell, J. A., F. R. Andrews and G. Lindsley. 1989. Biodiversity of North American insects. American Entomological Society 66:1-14.
Werner, A. 2016. Object recognition in flight: how do bees distinguish between 3D shapes? PlosOne DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0147106.
Books:
Holmes, S. A. 1990. Crimean butterflies in southern London. Oxford University Press, Oxford, xii + 503 pp.
Book Chapters:
Watson, J. B. 1988. The biology of Crimean butterflies. In: Watson, W. X. and J. E. Ames, eds. The history of butterfly dispersal. Academic Press, New York, iv + 621 pp.
