Get Help Now!Freddy and Tesoro are two brothers who both seem to have strong issues with one another. Conflicts between siblings happen a bit too often causing them to be blinded and learning a lesson after the fact. A lot of the tension between siblings comeform them trying to prove a point at who is better. In the short story “The Jalapeño Contest” the tension between the two brothers Freddy and Tesoro is trying to prove who is the more macho man from their fathers ritual of who can eat the most jalapeños.
This isn’t their first rodeo of this contest. According to the short story “The Jalapeño Contest”, the narrator states, “they are older and have to prove a point.” 316. With the brothers being blinded of how this could effect them in the end they begin stuffing the lesson down their throat.
According to the short story “The Jalapeño Contest”, the narrator asserts, “Neither says anything, though a close study of each man’s face would tell you that the sudden burst of jalapeño energy does not waste time in changing the eater’s perception of reality.” 316. This is the beginning of Freddy and Tesoro’s great personal price they will pay.
Freddy is already dripping sweat on his head only being on his second jalapeño, Tesoro’s equilibrium levels remain balanced while crunching on his fourth, completely unaware to the price he is about to pay. In the short story “The Jalapeño Contest”, the narrator speculates, “Freddy leans back as the table begins to sway in his damp vision. He coughs, and a sharp pain rips through his chest. Tesoro attempts to laugh at his brother, but Freddy sees it is something else.” 317.
By the way Freddy’s body is reacting to this contest it should make him want to surrender, be the bigger person and let his brother win. At this moment he is only on his second jalapeño, with sweat dripping down his head.
Rather then Tesoro who is humble and laughing at Freddy. But as for someone who is trying to prove they are better than someone it’s like trying to stop someone with a future goal, nothing will stop them. As Tesoro begins to feel the jalapeños, he still fails to see the lesson in this contest. According to the short story “The Jalapeño Contest”, the narrator reflects, “As Freddy finishes his third jalapeño Tesoro begins to breathe faster upon swallowing this sixth.” 317.
With almost a moment of clarity, a break through, a lesson learned! The contest still lives on. According to “The Jalapeño Contest”, the narrator speculates, “The contest momentarily stops as both brothers shift in their seats and the sweat pours down their faces. Freddy clutches his stomach as eh reaches for a fourth delight. Tesoro has not taken his seventh.” 317.
Though Tesoro pauses momentarily before his seventh, Freddy still thrives onto defeat his brother with his fourth jalapeño, they still seem to be within the same manner state of mind in hallucination. According to “The Jalapeño Contest” the narrator mediates, “There is a bright blue bird sitting on Tesoro’s head, and Tesoro is struggling to laugh because Freddy has a huge red spider crawling on top of his head.” 317.
Crunching on his fourth Freddy still drenching in sweat, Tesoro still on pause sipping his beer then finally begins his seventh, but completes within one bite. Freddy who hasn’t had a drink yet begins seeing double Tesoro’s while moving onto his fifth jalapeño and not being able to breathe.
Tesoro’s personal price he is paying other than hallucinating is tremendous farting, and his face turning purple. That blue bird Freddy once saw sitting on his brother’s head has now turned to a burning flame of light. This could be viewed as a sign of Freddy beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel in what he is doing to himself.
As perceived in the “The Jalapeño Contest”, the narrator weighs, “Freddy bites into his fifth as Tesoro flips his eighth jalapeño into his mouth, stem and all. This is it. Freddy goes into convulsions and drops to the floor as the huge animal that is Tesoro pitches forward and throws up millions of jalapeño seeds all over the table.” 317. After his final fifth jalapeño he reaches his limit of no longer being able to bare the state he is in.
He begins having involuntary movements, more hallucinations, and passes out……………………………
