ENG 1101 Literacy and Its’ Many Meanings.
In Mike Rose’s essay Blue Collar Brilliance, Rose discusses how service work requires more intelligence than most people think. He challenges the argument that everyone needs to go college to lead a successful life, and uses his mother and uncle as a supporting example of this. His uncle worked at General Motors for thirty-three years, and went from being a cog in the assembly line to supervising the paint and body division. His uncle states that “it was like schooling”, and that it was “a place where you’re constantly learning.” Most service jobs are like this, where formal education is not required, but you have to have some capacity to learn. Rose goes on to say that intelligence should not be measured by numbers and tests.This applies to blue collar workers.
Rose goes on to state (that) “Manipulating tools is intimately tied to knowledge of what a particular instrument can do in a particular situation and do better than other similar tools. A worker must also know the characteristics of the material one is engaging, how it reacts to various cutting or compressing devices, to degrees of heat, or to lines of force.” This can be applied to many different scenarios, such as a mechanic trying to work on a car. Sometimes they may have to improvise a fix, or a tool to fix something right due to either no space, or the tool is not quite right for the job.
Having come from a county where the poverty percentage rate is seventh highest in the state of Ohio (22.7%), inhabitants often have to make repairs themselves. I cannot recall how many times I have seen my late father repair something with some scrap cable, some bolts and other miscellaneous items we had laying around the house. I learned from watching and helping him work on our vehicles because we could not to take them to a repair shop. Many people iknew were in much the same situation as my family had been. We learned by watching others do the work first, and then following suit. However, most of us were not good in regular subjects, such as English, Math, or History. We did well with hands on subjects,doing things that allowed us to use our hands and our senses.
Blue collar workers generally have to think on their feet, and Rose touches on this by saying “Sensory data merge with concept, as when an auto mechanic relies on sound, vibration, and even smell to understand what cannot be observed”.
I agree with the argument that college is not one-size-fits-all. College is not for everybody, and we as a society need to get to rid of the notion that it is. I agree with the argument posed by Rose that intelligence should not be based on IQ scores.
