A deconstruction of the dichotomies/dialectics of sin and redemption in Flannery O´Connor’s novel Wise Blood and the short story The Life You Save May Be Your Own using automobile imagery
This will be my degree paper for my B.A in English Literature. The trope of redemption by means of a post-modernist close reading of the emblematic symbol of the automobile in Flannery O´Connor’s novel ’Wise Blood’(1952) and the short story ’The Life You Save May Be Your Own’ (1955). An exploration and analysis of the possible religious connotations found in the symbolism around the old Essex in Wise Blood and the 29´Ford in The Life You Save May Be Your Own. In both narratives I will examine the text for ideas of sin and redemption through the symbolism of the ownership of a car in the rural migratory American south of the 1950’s. I will attempt a comparison between the functional and religious role the old Essex and the 29´Ford play for Hazel Mote and Mr. Shiftlet in the two narratives.
