In addition to terrorism, another issue affecting law enforcement practices is organized crime. Law enforcement agencies are using joint task forces to anticipate crime and apprehend suspects associated with organized crime by focusing on base operations that often fall in numerous jurisdictions.
For example, in 2005, agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and numerous local police forces across the country and abroad launched a wide-scale raid against the international gang Mara Salvatrucha, commonly called MS-13.
The raid netted over 600 arrests across the U.S. and also included arrests in Central America. Cyber threats related to issues ranging from identity theft to the solicitation of minors for sex also require law enforcement officers to be proactive.
