CS100A – Annotated bibliography

CS100A – Annotated bibliography Due: December 1, 2015
Step 3: Locating the sources

To support your thesis statement, the next step is to turn to the academic literature and find research undertaken on this topic. The sources you select play the important role of supporting your thesis statement. These sources should engage directly with your thesis statement and need to be reliable, peer-reviewed, academic sources. Your annotated bibliography will include a total of 5 sources (not already in the textbook) from two different formats:

3 scholarly academic journals
2 books or chapters in edited books

*Keep track of your method here: your final annotated bibliography includes a few sentences telling us about the strategies you used to find each source (What keywords did you use? Which search engines did you turn to?). “I Googled it” is not sufficient, try exploring other search engines and platforms. The library also offers resources on how to search databases.
Step 4: Reading and assessing the sources

Next, read carefully your sources (for a book, you may focus on one chapter). Assess the source by writing an annotation describing and evaluating it. The following questions might help you write the annotation: What is the author’s central thesis statement? Which methodology was used? What are the study’s conclusions? What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of that source? Is the author – or website- credible and why? How is this source useful for me: is the position of the authors supporting my thesis statement or, on the contrary, is it a counter-argument? Each annotation should be between 150-200 words.
Step 5: Selecting one quote from each source

For each source, select what you consider to be the most compelling quote. You will use this excerpt in three different versions for the final annotated bibliography: a complete quote, a summary and a paraphrase.
Step 6: Preparing your annotated bibliography

Your annotated bibliography should be 8 pages long and include the following:

A cover page (p. 1) with your name, the name of the instructor and of your TA, course number and section, university, and date.
Description of topic and thesis statement (Steps 1, a, b, c, and d and Step 2) (pp. 2 and 3)
Annotated bibliography (pp. 4-8): one page per source with the following:
The complete reference using (rigorously) either the MLA or the APA style formatting (see Little Pearson)
The annotation – including a word count
A short sentence describing how you found that source
Your selected quote (step 5) as an original block quotation
The same quote as a summary
The same quote as a paraphrase

Presentation format is Times New Roman 12 points. Line spacing: single. Pages are numbered on the top right of each page with your last name, except for the cover page.
